With a lifelong commitment to equity, justice, and belonging – Philip attempts to lend a hand “bending the arc of the moral universe toward justice”. As a practitioner, he is a seasoned turnaround leader with broad/deep experience, grounded in his East Bay roots. As a consultant, he has provided interim leadership (15+ gigs), transition support for an array of organizations, teaches, was on the Alliance for Nonprofit Management Terry McAdam Book Award Committee and is a member of the Executive Transitions Leadership Continuity.
He is formerly the long term Executive Director of a $7 million, 85 employee, 800 volunteer, organization based in Oakland. In other positions, he has led the turnaround of a large cultural facility, startup of a new U.S. fair trade coffee initiative and the growth of a statewide organization focused on children’s issues – organizational budgets from $1 to $30 million. He was on the Editorial Board of the Social Enterprise Reporter. He has taught classes at CSU East Bay and Museum Studies at JFK University. He has published articles in Advancing Philanthropy, The Nonprofit Times. He enjoys theater, ukulele/guitar, Dragonboat paddling, cycling, motorcycling and his multi-ethnic family of three sisters and with his partner Sherry Smith has two daughters, and Diego – the dog.
